6 paces before the crease?
He'd need those 6 paces to get back into his rhythm. Earlier, rather than later, would be key to a good delivery.

How come soccer players or footy players or even tennis players dont need a mid run jink to time their runs?
The bowlers put on a mid run skip/jink. I dont see javelin or shotput people have a mid run jink/skip before they exert.
I've had bit more of a think about the topic. Footballers (round and oval balls) have paced themselves out. They know that their foot will be correctly placed when they reach the ball. In tennis, it's all about the angle of the racquet to impart the desired spin and direction. The running is just to get to the damn ball. Javelin likewise it's speed that matters.
With cricket it's about pace or spin. Pace bowlers simply run like mad from the next suburb and bowl. But notice, how they place their front foot for the delivery. Straight out in front. The reason is physics. They slam on the brakes and use their back like a whiplash to add extra acceleration to the ball.
Spin bowlers, on the other hand, require more finesse in their ball control. If you just let it go, you have little or no spin. If you jink and then come down as you make your delivery, your hand pulls down as you release the ball. The jink adds to this effect. You can add significant reverse spin to the ball. This, in conjunction with the aerodynamics of a worn ball can make it move in unpredictable ways Firstly it will slow down significantly on contact with the pitch, due to the additional friction provided by the reverse spin. This, combined with the aerodynamics of this worn ball can mean that not only is the batsmen dealing with a ball that suddenly comes up "short" but it's suddenly changed direction. Get the combination right and not only has the batsman missed a ball previously thought to be "This is going into the Members' stand", but it's curved back and stump-cam cops another hit.
This is my understanding.
