Watch most cricket bowlers and you will note they have a strange jink in their run up before they deliver the ball to the batsman.

How does that jink add to the momentum of the bowl?

Do you think i could bowl quicker from a standstill than thommo on a full runnup?

My guess would be that there are psychological and physiological components involved.

1) If some guy took a run up from the neighboring suburb before chucking a ball at me, my first instinct would be to rapidly adopt the foetal position. So yes, intimidation.

2) The run up creates a certain rhythm that sets up that swing in the the final delivery. the jink increases the angular momentum at that critical moment of the release of the ball, which may well serve to increase the velocity of the ball.

Disclaimer: Don't take my word for it, girls throw like me.

Back in the day, i was captain of a cricket team with state bowlers in it. I opened the bowling, sizzling pace, i didnt have no jink

But look at some cricket bowlers about after the first few steps of their run in, its like they step into a ditch and correct their run? What is that? How can it add anything especially when they run at least a few more paces to bowl

I used to know a bloke who would steam in from the boundary, then seems like he tripped up a bit during the last few steps and lose all momentum. Then he would get hit over his head for 6. Next ball he would steam in more angry for the same result. Maybe his big run in was due to him gaving to retrieve the ball.

Perhaps he was adjusting his pace so as not to step over the line?

He'd need those 6 paces to get back into his rhythm. Earlier, rather than later, would be key to a good delivery.

How come soccer players or footy players or even tennis players dont need a mid run jink to time their runs?

The bowlers put on a mid run skip/jink. I dont see javelin or shotput people have a mid run jink/skip before they exert.

I've had bit more of a think about the topic. Footballers (round and oval balls) have paced themselves out. They know that their foot will be correctly placed when they reach the ball. In tennis, it's all about the angle of the racquet to impart the desired spin and direction. The running is just to get to the damn ball. Javelin likewise it's speed that matters.

With cricket it's about pace or spin. Pace bowlers simply run like mad from the next suburb and bowl. But notice, how they place their front foot for the delivery. Straight out in front. The reason is physics. They slam on the brakes and use their back like a whiplash to add extra acceleration to the ball.

Spin bowlers, on the other hand, require more finesse in their ball control. If you just let it go, you have little or no spin. If you jink and then come down as you make your delivery, your hand pulls down as you release the ball. The jink adds to this effect. You can add significant reverse spin to the ball. This, in conjunction with the aerodynamics of a worn ball can make it move in unpredictable ways Firstly it will slow down significantly on contact with the pitch, due to the additional friction provided by the reverse spin. This, combined with the aerodynamics of this worn ball can mean that not only is the batsmen dealing with a ball that suddenly comes up "short" but it's suddenly changed direction. Get the combination right and not only has the batsman missed a ball previously thought to be "This is going into the Members' stand", but it's curved back and stump-cam cops another hit.

This is my understanding.

I expect you don't understand the complexity, or aren't interested in trying. More the latter, would be my opinion. I'm not a cricket tragic, but the game intrigues me.

I love cricket !!!

I was the only china-man :funky with glasses: to be part of a team in Melbourne's Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association for over 10 years since under 16s .... At 5 foot 4  I've opened alot of the bowling ... in my later years, and still being 5 foot 4, the jink is extremely important as I was able to deliver dangerous in-swingers and bouncers !!!
