STI 6 speed DCCD or non DCCD? or PPG straight cut dog box?

The car will be running 300+ kw atw and is a street car.

I'd go a DCCD 6spd if I could grab one for a good price, otherwise a regular 6spd.

Why, because you retain the best driveability shifting-wise and the gears are quieter.
Dog boxes would be annoying to drive on the street particularly at first, and don't even think about the gf or someone else ever driving it.
If you are inclined to go for a PPG straight cut, get one with synchros rather than dog engagement so it's still easy to drive.
Dog engagement should be left only for regular dragstrip cars in my opinion.

I had the 1-4th Dog Engagement Straight cut in my Coupe, i drove it everyday with no dramas its not that noisy and you get used to shifting with it, after about 3-4 weeks of driving with it i didnt even realise it was any different to any other box

Are the 6 speeds as strong as the PPG straight cut dog box or the syncro box?

Can you dump the clutch with the 6 speed and will it handle launching all the time?

Cheers everyone.

That's alright only people driving it will prob be me, Widge and my father inlaw. The missus has only ever reversed the car about a meter in the driveway. She doesn't want to drive it.

I'm yet to hear anyone fudging a 6spd as a result clutch dumping.... heard people snapping driveshafts and pressure plates before doing any damage to the 6spd box.
In any case, no gearbox is indestructible if it is constantly seeing abuse on a daily basis, at the end of the day it is a mechanical device and can give up.
You look at drag cars with such heavy duty boxes, even they are rebuilding their boxes every so often.

Also another thing to consider, while it probably doesn't worry you, a dog box may or may not affect resale of the car.
For example if I was looking at two GC8's, one with PPG straight cut synchro, one with dog engagement, I'd definitely go for the synchro one, but that's just me.

Yeah the resale value doesn't bother me, I know i will never get back what i spend. I think if the car ever got sold the engine and gearbox would come out and most likely be put in a 05/06/07 sti. Don't think i would be selling it for a very long time though.

Why would you choose synchro over dog engagement?

Cheers.

Are the DCCD gearboxes as strong/reliable as the non DCCD?

I suppose if the 6 speed was to break i could put a ppg 1-2 straight cut in it.

Well on a street car, I don't think I'd be able to make much use of the main purpose of a dogbox (clutchless upshift). Would rarely need lighting fast shifts on the street. However if it were to be a regular drag strip goer, then yes, dog box all the way, that's where quickshifts actually count.
Plus I think I'd be too lazy to deal with constant double clutching when driving the car casually down to the shops or missus' house or something haha.

Again these are all personal preferences. :)

Appreciate that this may be annoying, but if anyone wants to explain the terms above and how they differ, I would be more than grateful :)

Yeah that is true but i use my missus car as much as possible to go to the shops and stuff. I think i could put up with it. But a 6 speed would be a cheaper option though.

Without getting too technical:
DCCD stands for driver control centre diff, lets you adjust front to rear torque split ratio.
Some STI 6spd had this, some didn't (depending on year model and/or market)

PPG is an aftermarket gearset manufacturer. Straight cut refers to the cut of the gears, as opposed to helical (angle cut) like factory gears. Straight cuts whine (like reverse gear coz it's straight cut), helicals do not whine.
Dog refers to the engagement type. They allow for clutchless shifting under load, but required double clutching and rev matching when driven casually.
Whereas all normal boxes use synchro engagement, synchro's match the gear and selector speeds so you don't have to worry about it ;)

thats about as much as i can say without including too much jargon lol
