DCCD 6-speed gearboxes are just as strong as non-DCCD 6-speed gearboxes. The gearsets are identical other than the ratio changes from 2006.

You do realise that dog engagement gearboxes require more maintenance than a synchro one right? The straight cut bit makes them stronger.

I reckon you'd be mad to choose a dog-engagement straight-cut 5 speed over a 6 speed, unless you were planning regular trips down the 1/4 or the last tenth was vital at the curcuit. Even then, I'd still probably go the 6 speed.

...Ben

What maintenence is required for the PPG Dogbox apart from the usual oil changing?

I think i would prefer to have the DCCD 6 speed over the non DCCD. Do you know what the price difference is roughly between the 2? I am prob over a year away from getting the gearbox (unless mine breaks in the meantime).

Cheers Ben.

Has anyone ever broken a 6 speed from doing hard launches or dumping the clutch?

There is a car in the states that runs 9's with a stock 6 speed..

Dog boxes were the shit 10 years ago when 6 bangers were not around

You can always make straight cut noises with your mouth if thats what you're after

I'm after the strongest most reliable gearbox to go with the new engine and turbo set up I am currently building.

You can have a reco wrc box for about $145k landed

PPG's are shit & still break. Maybe look at Modena. Those six speeds are shit two, no whine at all aay

$145K for a gearbox!!! I will stick with either the PPG dogbox or the 6 speed. The car will hopefully be running 300+ kw atw when its finished.

I'm a little slow on the uptake here, have you made any decisions?

IMO aftermarket gears will only ever be a patch fix for the 5 speed. The 5 speed transfer case is also pretty ordinary. Six speed is stronger & more civilised and the DCCD is excellent... The short ratio's are fun but ridiculously close. Took a little getting used to - was easy at first to forget what gear I was in!!

No decision has been made yet. I won't be doing the gearbox untill the engine and turbo set up is all done. I am just trying to find out as much info as possible on the PPG dogbox and the 6 speed.

Why do you always refer to Dogboxes as PPG boxes, PPG is one of many gearset manufacturers & whilst they may be reasonably priced, the're not the best!

If you go & spend 8k on a PPG gearset instead of 4k for a 6MT, YOU MAD!

It's alot to spend for a little cred, especially when the 6MT is stronger ;)

I'm now considering buying an 03 to 06 STI and putting the forged 2.5L and Garret GT35r twist mount in that instead. That way I don't need to worry about the gearbox, breaks and everything else.

good choice.. having to upgrade brakes & whatnot is a waste of time & money

& just think, the STi values dive in the arse fast, like everything else Subaru, so you should find something good for less.

Yeah I think this is my best option. I would like to try to get a black 05 or 06 STI. I might do some track days in it aswell :D

So I drove an 02 STI today and I really liked the way the STI drives and feels, so I think I have decided to upgrade the GC8 to an 03 to 06 STI and build the forged 2.5L to go into that instead.

Okay, I'll explain a few things for any newer members here;

1) Even with a 6 speed or Straight cut, if you dump the clutch, you can still break it. NOTHING will last under extreme conditions.
2) If you don't break the box, you will certainly do your diff, driveshafts ect. These just are not built for that power. (300kw cars do these in all the time)
3) A 6speed STi box weighs around 40kg more than a 5speed. So if you are weight conscious that may affect you choice. (It is for me)
4) Cost. For a 6speed box you need, drive shafts, correct ratio diff, hubs, DCCD controller ect. it goes on and on. 5speed Straight cuts will only require the box internals be modifed. You can run the OEM shafts ect.
5) Ratio's. A 5speed box has longer gears. Means less time shifting more time on the Go pedal. Really good for Drag race conditions. I also like it around a track or twisties. I've never driven a 6speed in race contitions so I can't tell you if its any good. My box has good ratio's around corners and getting off the line.

Okay so, Yes a Straight cut 5 speed will be more noisey. But if you bought a WRX for the quietness of the drive, I think you have issuies, but each to thier own right. Also you can get 5th in Helical cut for people who do a fair amount of highway driving.

With my 5 Speed I sit on 3000RPM @ 120km/h. and 2500RPM @ 100km/h.

Dog Engagement is a impossible dream for the Street. They require too much maintainance for Daily driving. In a race car, Yes. Not in a street car. Syncromesh with billet selector forks, and your set on ur 'Super awesome flat floor box breaking shifts!'

I'd choose the box for your chosen application.. What exactly are you planning on using it for?

I was planning on building a 2.5L forged motor with a GT35r aiming for up to 300 kw atw. I was deciding between the PPG and the 6 speed as a replacement for the stock 5 speed when and if it decided to give up on me, which would only have been a matter of time, Lol. I am hopefully still going to build the engine/turbo combo. I really do like the sound of the straight cuts though.

In any case, no gearbox is indestructible if it is constantly seeing abuse on a daily basis, at the end of the day it is a mechanical device and can give up.
You look at drag cars with such heavy duty boxes, even they are rebuilding their boxes every so often.

Also another thing to consider, while it probably doesn't worry you, a dog box may or may not affect resale of the car.
For example if I was looking at two GC8's, one with PPG straight cut synchro, one with dog engagement, I'd definitely go for the synchro one, but that's just me.

Seen a 6 speed for a 04 broken on stock power, cracked casing Very aggressive driver, many launches!

So they aren't unbreakable then.
