Evening all!
I have an my06 with stock set up apart from an STi head unit with the 6 cd in dash.

Is there a fairly basic upgrade of head unit and speakers to improve the sound and bass of course.

I don't want to go amps and subs, been there before and the pram has to go in the boot!

Some quality speakers replacing the stock ones help?

If you have an Ipod/Iphone or store your music on USB i would recommend this headunit:

I bought mine about a year & a half ago for much more than the above one and havent looked back. So much easier than having a wallet full of CD's i just use my iphone/ipod and a 16GB USB stick with all my music on it. Sold my Pionner 7" TV to get this as i was sick of touch screen.

As far as speakers go im not really that educated on them. I think (could be wrong on this) if your after splits that produce decent bass you would be looking for 3 way splits. If boot space is of concern have you looked into the Pioneer Slim line sub range?

Hey mate i'm exactly like you about not wanting to lose boot space, I have however seen moulded sub boxes that fit into the corner of the boot and allow you to retain all your space. However if you dont want subs this is what I would recommend to give you awesome sound without one and on a budget. 7x10's in the rear parcel shelf and Jaycar response 6.5" splits in the front doors all powered to a jaycar response 4 channel amp which sits under your passenger seat. If you have the dosh dynomat your front doors this will make a huge improvement to bass. JBHI-FI have a great range of head decks too.

Pete as far as the 7 x10's or 6 x9's in the rear shelf go do you know if any cutting of metal is required underneath?

I wouldnt recommend buying from eBay due to warranty and parallel importing issues. Support specialist retailers, and in turn you'll get the support and piece of mind in return, should anything go wrong (rather than having to send your deck back to Hong Kong for warranty, because Pioneer Australia wont touch you).

I wouldnt recommend 6x9s or 7x10s in an MY06, as there would be some serious cutting of metal to make them fit.

Instead, invest that money in a good quality set of front speakers, and sound deadening the front doors. Far better results are gained from this. A modest 2ch amp to power them would compliment the setup nicely and also allow for future expansion.

Use a high quality LOC if you want to keep the OEM source unit. :)
