Hey Guys

My system is getting a bit old and tired. Mainly my amp and sub but while im at it i wouldnt mind redoing the speakers as well.

Currently i have some Yellow cone pioneers, not sure with the part number is but i got them about 2.5 years ago for around $350. RRP was well over the $500 mark. As they were on display at JB HI FI and the displays were the only set left i purchased those. They still work pretty good but i wouldnt mind re-doing the whole set up.

Can anyone recommend some good splits? I want them in the front doors/parcel shelf and also some 4" in the rear doors.

Are these any good?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT

Any help appreciated :)

Thanks,
Paul

Try Boston SL60's :)

Just make sure you give them clean good power from like a MTX/JL Audio Amplifier :)

Dont worry about the parcel shelf and get yourself some good 2ways for the rear doors :) again - maybe some SL45's from Boston

Whats the budget?

As mentioned, don't worry about the parcel shelf, and go for some good 2 way coaxials in the rear doors.

For the front, get a nice set of splits and spend that extra money from the rears, on some sound deadening for the front doors to really bring the front speakers to life.

An amp powering them will also help. :)

Thanks guys a few questions..

1) How hard/messy is sound deadening?
2) Budget, id say im willing to spend $1500 - $2000. Thats just speakers, sub, amp/s. I have a new HU so thats not needed.
3) Is Boston any good (excuse my lack of stereo knowledge)

4) Can someone recommend me a full setup then? lol (speakers/sub/amps)

I'll explain what i want so maybe someone can give me some detailed products to go with the music i listen to.

Basically i dont want stupid amounts of bass. I much rather SQ over Bass and want to hear every single instrument thats being played, every little ting and every little ding. I like my music LOUD aswell. Type of music i listen to is Minimal/Tech. Heres a few youtube vids to get an idea of the sound.

I just want something that i can turn up loud without distorition... which is what im getting now.

EDIT: Thought i'd add I only want 1 sub in the back. Two is not an option.

Not too hard to DIY at all mate, just a bit fiddly. If you're handy with some tools it can be DIY'd, but my advice is to take your time with it and have patience. I can provide some guidelines as to how to do it etc, but as they say, pictures tell 1000 words, so have a flick through these:

Thats quite a healthy budget, and you will definitely get you the results you want with decent gear and good install techniques. Like it or not though, sound deadening is going to be a given here in order to extract best performance from the splits. :) It only adds about 3~4kg in total to the front doors.

Yep, they make good speakers (you'll see ive installed a set of the SL60's in that R33 Skyline), but theres heaps of options at that pricepoint (sub-$600 mark) that id probably recommend in their place.

Something like the DLS Ultimate UP6i, which i've also installed into a Bugeye WRX with excellent results (coupled with a good quality amp, sound deadening and diffuser panels). They can be seen here:
http://www.formaudio.com/gallery/141-dls-ultimate-up6i

And installed into the 01 WRX from a little while ago. These fit behind the factory door trims to ensure OEM appearance.

It also has DLS 4" 2 way coaxials installed in the rear doors for fill. These were run off the HU, and of course fit behind the factory door trims.

The fronts were run off a bridged Genesis Profile Four amp.

Yep, that would be me. :) lol.

Are you DIY'ing a custom subbox to suit the specs of the sub? (I can help with the design of this if necessary, depending on the sub), or do you need something that comes in a prefab enclosure?

Something like an Image Dynamics ID12 or IDQ12 would give nice smooth bass and get loud for the odd occasion that you want to draw some attention! :D The beauty of them is that they also suit relatively small enclosures for ease of installation too.

Amp wise, id recommend a good 4ch, in order to run the front splits, and bridge to the sub. I'd run the rears off the HU. :)

Hope that helps. :)

Cheers,
Rick.

Wow.. More than i bargained for Rick lol Thanks heaps for the input!! If only you were in Melbourne to do installs, you seem like you really have a passion for what you do and know what your on about. Places ive been to here in Melb are useless and just want your money which is why i usually just install my own systems, even though they may not sound the best.

As far as the sub box goes i dont want anything fancy with perspex etc. I just want the sub as far back against the rear seat with a board over the parcel shelf area (in the boot) if that makes sense. And the amp/s mounted either behind that board or on the front of it (in view). Something along the lines of this:

http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl= ... =129&ty=37

Excuse the crappy image just something i quickly googled.

Recommend me a complete setup. Speakers/Sub/Amp and i will buy all the goodies from you. You know what combos work well. PM me some prices if you want so i get a rough idea :)

P.S. I dont know if it matters or not but my HU is a Pioneer MVH-8200BT

P.P.S. Whats better, sub facing the rear or inside the cabin?

P.P.P.S. 2 or 4 ohm sub? What does this mean anyway?

No worries mate, thanks for the compliment. I'll get onto putting something together for you tonight with a few options and send it in either a PM or email. :)
