Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about this... my mate at work has just bought his daughter a "Golf TSI" and is a 1.4Litre Turbo. Only thing is he paid a deposit on it and now found out since his daughters on her red P's she cant drive it. He was told he needs to apply for an excemption..... anyone got any ideas how long this will take or if he actually needs to have the excemption? RTA as usual havent been much help to him.

Thanks guys!!

The RTA needs to provide the exemption form to him.

They will only give the exemption if there is a legit need for the car: eg. Its a work car and the only one she can drive.
She won't get the exemption simply because they didnt know when they bought the car.
If she has access to another car that she IS allowed to drive (eg if her dad had a camry), the exemption will be denied straight out anyways.

There is basically 0% chance of her getting the exemption unforunately.
Perhaps the car dealer where he bought it from will allow for her to change to a POLO. They are turbo, and ALLOWED for P-platers. One of only 3 cars allowed by the RTA ;)

^^ Not entirely true mike.

If the car has less than a certain power/weight ratio, she will be granted an easy exemption.

My friend, when on his P's, his dad bought a Mercedes 1.8L Turbo. Even though the family had 3 other non turbo cars, he was granted the exemption with no worries, as the power of the car (even though turbo) was soo low.

From what i can see on RedBook, a 2011 Golf TSi has 118kw. A 2006 Impreza R has 118kw. Difference is, the Golf gets to 100km/h 3.6s quicker than the impreza :P

The Golf is no race car, but its certainly more zippy than most little P-plater cars. Best just apply for the exemption, and hope for the best!

How long ago was that tho? Cuz as of July 1, 2011, the rules have changed significantly. They are super strict.
Did some research when buying a car for Amy, and its near damn impossible to get an exemption now and were provided with a list of cars that were 'P-Plater friendly'.
VW Polo 77TSI being one of the 3 turbo cars allowed. Its a 1.2L turbo

Theres no point in setting a list of cars you're 'not allowed to drive as a P plater' if its 'easy' to get an exemption for certain ones.. They might as well just allow those cars.

No harm in trying for an exemption tho.. try your luck. Tho i reckon it will come back rejected - even for that car.

Yeah well he says that it's on the list as cars for exemption but they also have other cars in their family so I reckon his got no hope in getting it approved.....

Heard bout the ratio aspect but from the discussion he had with rta they don't seem to know anything about this!

I told him initially to research before buying the car but he didn't... Seems like the car yard told him she's fine to drive it... The saga will continue at work tomorrow...
