Thinking of doing a turbo upgrade later on this year and am looking for info on what turbo to go with. What has everyone had/got and what would you recommend?

As a cheaper option, VF34.

Correct. I just sold my VF35 2 days ago for $600 in very good condition. VF34's are around $1500 new, but not sure how much second hand.

The VF34 > VF35. Ball bearing, and P18 housing for more top end.
But VF35 is insane value for money turbo!

Have you posted your Dyno with the twin scroll and thoughts somewhere yet?
Does it feel very different?

Had the VF35 on the classic, and although the power was great (when it eventually spooled up!) something that kicks in a little earlier would be ideal.

The only VF series turbos that will kick in any faster than the vf35 is going to be a vf36 or vf37 twin scroll.

The p15 (from vf35) is one of the smallest exhaust housing found on a VF turbo. You may have to go with something like a td05-big16g, but it wont net you the same power.

Vf22 is much larger than a vf30/34/35, so will be even laggier. Better top end, but more lag which she doesnt want.

if it took along time to spool up there must have been something wrong with something else...

Vf22
This turbo has the highest output potential of all of the IHI VF series turbos and is the best choice for those who are looking for loads of top end power. The top end power however, does not come without a cost. The VF22 spools significantly slower than the rest of the IHI models due to the larger P20 exhaust housing and is much less suited for daily driving than some of the other models. Although the largest VF series turbo, the VF22 is not quite optimal for stroked engines or those who wish to run more than 20PSI of boost.

Vf30
The VF30 is commonly considered the best bang for the buck turbo in the IHI VF series line. A relatively new model the VF30 features the same exhaust housing as the VF24 but a larger compressor side similar to the VF22. The combination of these two parts results in increased output potential without the lag associated with the VF22. Although it doesn't offer the top end supremacy of the VF22, the VF30 is a great compromise between these unit and the quicker spooling models.

Vf34
The VF34 is nearly identical to the VF30, with the same exhaust housing and compressor. However the VF34 goes back to the ball bearing design, and in doing so achieves full boost approximately 500RPM sooner than the comparable VF30. The VF34 is the most recent IHI design and as such costs slightly more than its counterpart. Top end performance and maximum output are identical to the 30.

Vf35
The VF35 has identical internals as the VF30 and it uses divided thrust bearings. However, the exhaust housing is a P15 which means this turbo will have fantastic spool characteristics. This turbo is standard on the new WRX Type RA. LIMITED SUPPLY.

Doesn't a front mount ic add lag as well?

Most likely the fact that once the front mount was removed, it didnt get re-tuned. But even with the front mount on, it was still a bit slow to get up and go.
Maybe there was something else wrong. i wouldnt know. New owner has just had a new front mount put on it and recons its a 100% improvement and goes like a rocket. so who knows.

PS: NO BITCHING!!

Lol

I think the most common upgrade done to wrxs are vf35, sti ic, silicone intake, walbro pump, catless uppipe (only on bug Wrx), exhaust & a tune.

Well there you go, it is the smallest.

vf35 vs vf36 would actually be a really really good match in 60ft times.
The vf36 is twin scroll, but has a p25 housing (internally the size of a p18), verse the p15.
Compressors are the same size.

Should test it in winter at wsid kurty? i think you got a 1.6 didnt you?

Yeh, slight scaling issue on the graph though. judging by bum dyno, full boost / torque seems to kick in around 3200rpm, not the 2800 as it suggests.

If theres a dyno day some time, ill see how it compares. Car is a blessing to drive than before.

If you want a new turbo with more good response and cheap go a kando dynamics td05 big 16g.
