plus also population of usa - 307,006,550 as at 2009
population of Australia - 21,874,900 as at 2009
means that they have a higher purchasing power = lower costs

Puts things into perspective a bit.
Anyone know whether its worth importing a car from the U.S then considering the price difference?

You can't import a vehicle if it is available for sale in australia

or something along those lines anyway.

You still cop it up the bum bum with taxes, though

Market size is the biggest problem. When shipping it's cheaper per unit to ship larger numbers. Also the dealers purchase them then sell to the public. So much like anything else if you buy in bulk each unit is noticeably cheaper, then add gov sales tax, importing duties/tariffs. Also the local manufacturers are largely protected and with such a small market they have to fight for each sale. So to protect the locals and jobs they tax the hell out of imports.
With out tariffs and taxes a BMW 330i would only be $30k'ish. Or so said wheels mag a few years ago lol.
