Some photos I took when installing rear parcel tray speakers in my car... in case it helps anyone else
Not easy but it looks alright in the end.

Warning: This is a really basic installation... if you want something done properly I suggest you contact mad89 :)

Installed 6.5 inch splits

Problems found.

1. The depth of the speakers hitting the boot rod springs
Due to this, the parcel tray is actually higher than it use to be... I used some foam bits to hold it up...but it's nice and firm once the clips go in

2. Cutting the holes
I used a knife but maybe a hot knife could have been better

I covered some holes with Dynamat but I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do though

Well I replaced some Infinity ref splits I had there before with Focal splits so it does sound better... i can go louder with no distortion.
I added a 30band eclipse EQ and the system is starting to come alive :)
I think the main thing it did for the system overall is make it louder.

Not the most ideal installation of the speakers, but its not 'bad' so to speak.

My advice would be to solidify that plastic shelf as best you can with some 6mm or 9mm MDF fixed to the bottom of it.

At the very least, cut out some 6mm or 9mm MDF for the area that the speakers actually mount to. Something like this:

Image

What i would have done was make custom MDF spacers to mount the speakers to the metal parcel shelf itself, and then cut holes and only installed the grills (either the Focal grills, or custom ones for OEM look) onto the plastic parcel shelf.

Heres an example of some custom grills i did in my old car (also note custom fibreglass/2pack finished door pods to house 6.5" mids). Think how stealth and OEM they would look on your shelf, with the Focals hidden away. :)

Hmm mount the speakers on the metal bit using spacers and the grill on the parcel tray..
I never even thought of that hehe

That's why you're the pro

EDIT: By the way, do you use anything special to get rid vibrations caused by the sub?
I'm starting to get quite a few :(

Depends where the vibrations originate. Don't forget the main thing you're trying to achieve with this is dampening, isolation, and decoupling.

Dynamat will work best at lowering the resonant frequency of the panel (i.e. deadening, which is seperate), and something like Dynaliner or some closed cell foam will work best for, dampening and/or isolating and/or decoupling the two panels. :)

Have a look in my build thread and you'll see what i did with my parcel shelf. That said, my sub isnt in yet to see the effects/results, but i trust it to work pretty well.

BTW, thanks for the compliment, but i wouldn't go that far! haha.

Fck it man around here you're the car audio expert :)
Sure I haven't seen/heard your work personally but all your knowledge you share with us shows that know your stuff.
I've been to a few car audio places and man the bullsh!t they dish out just to sell you stuff... not all though

I might have to look into dynapad/liner later on.

The difference is that i do this on the side, because i love car audio. Its an extended hobby for me. I'm actually a Network Engineer by trade (or Uni degree) and work full time in System/Network Admin/Engineer sorta stuff.

In saying that though, even if i did do this full time, i dont think i'd be pushy or feed people bull crap just to make a sale. After all, my reputation would suffer and so would my installs (if i sold crap equipment just to make a buck for example). That's definitely not my style, and im sure anyone that has spoken to me in person about car audio could vouch for that! :D haha.

As for some of my work, theres heaps posted on my website, and ill soon be posting an article of a recent install i did in a Bugeye WRX, so i shall keep you posted on that one. :)

Looks great!

Question. Are the holes already cut out in the metal?

From factory, there are already 2 decent sized holes cut out in the metal. Just a matter of making sure you cut the parcel shelf in the right spots.
