Thought I'd take it upon myself to populate the ICE section a little ;)

Anyone own or heard any FOCAL speakers? Or amps for that matter? I've got a fantastic stereo at the moment, but once I get my new car I'm looking at dropping some big cash into my stereo so I want the right gear, & I've heard FOCAL is the best ;)

Any feedback or input much appreciated!

I got focal in the front vb135 and they are a very decent speakers..

want to get some in the back as well, focal or hertz are great for speakers. if you want a sub i would say go digital design they are very nice.

i highly recommend them over pioneer kenwood and other local brands.

talk to Marty from FHRX studios

I have these in the front
Focal 165A1
6.5" component speaker set

Maximum power 120W
Nominal power 60W
Sensitivity (2.83 V/1m) 92dB
Frequency response (+/-3dB) 60Hz - 20kHz
Nom. impedance 4 ohms
Tweeter TN44 Aluminum inverted dome
Mounting depth 66mm

Mounted with 18mm mdf (2x9mm actually) and fits just right
Sound is awesome but I have an EQ hooked up as well so I'm not sure how they would sound without one.
These are the entry level splits and I paid $280 for them
I also have all my doors dynamatted..

There are lots and lots of very high end brands to choose from. Focal is one of them. The best? I wouldn't say so.

Boston, Dynaudio, Morel, Crescendo, RE Audio, CDT, Diamond Audio, Audio Development, (just to name a few), all make fantastic speakers, that wouldn't disappoint!

It all comes down to your listening taste and preferences. What sounds good to you, might sound crap to your mate. Let your ears decide. :)

Agreed, what about best value for price speakers?
What would be the best sound quality splits for $300 in your opinion?

Boston sound is bloody good quality.. when the damn thing works!
My tweaters used to cut in and out all the time, until i found the problem.. REALLY dodgy curcuit boards. Ive had to use electrical tape to keep the components in place to allow it to work (soldering points seem ok?).
For such a well known brand like Boston (and $300) i would have expected better quality component boards, lol. Other than that, i love them, and would most likely buy them again..

A mate of mine uses FOCAL all round.. and god damn it sounds amazing!

Best value for money at the moment, id have to say go to Crescendo Opus 8.6. They retail at $699, but honestly, id have no hesitation in putting them up against speakers twice their price for comparison. However, like with any good speaker set, their performance also comes down to good quality installation. Things like a decent amp, sound deadening in the doors, diffuser panels and appropriate tweeter location/positioning.

I often say that you can have a cheap set of speakers installed well, that will in most cases outperform an expensive set of speakers installed poorly.

At around $300, you have Crescendo Opus 3 (or possibly Opus 5), Vibe BlackAir6, Boston S60 and a set from CDT Audio, that i cant remember the model number off at the moment sorry. There are others too of course, those are just off the top of my head.

Boston are known for their excellent build quality and rightly so. You are indeed correct in saying that there are a few design flaws in some of their parts, but these general dont hinder performance once you know the work arounds, which can be fiddly at times. They are certainly worth the effort though, especially with their high end sets such as Pro60SE and SPZ60. Though in saying that, for that kind of money (sub $1000 bracket, and $1500 bracket, respectively), there are ALOT of other options on the market that you should be considering aswell.

The same goes for Focal in regards to the last part. :)

I still use my Boston G512-44 in my own car, despite it being a discontinued item. Excellent build quality and sounds superb in the right box - which notably is not what Boston recommends.

Sorry for the late reply mate, but it seems a bit too late now. lol. Looks like hes bought it already?

For future reference, i would have recommended SPL Dynamics S2604 for $399 RRP, conservatively rated at 4x65wmrs, with variable high and low pass filters (40-4000hz) and 24db slopes. Great bang for buck amps! :)

Or for some serious grunt, RE Audio XT800.4v3, which is 4x100wrms and full range Class DE for increased efficiency for $479 RRP.

Hope that helps. :)

Does anyone have Focal speakers (preferably three way speakers) installed in their car and live in Sydney area? I need to have a listen!
