This is a simple maintenance procedure, but I've read that some people had no clue how to do it. So, I decided I would post today so you can do it yourself as well.

1. Undo the wiring harness that goes into the MAF near the large diameter hose.

2. Remove the upper portion of the air intake box by undoing the metal clips and unscrewing the clamp that holds the box to the large diameter hose. The MAF is a small part of the upper air intake box, that sits between the hose and the air intake box.

3. Use the MAF cleaner made by CRC. You can pick up a bottle for about $25.00 from Repco or Supercheap.

4. Spray the sensor with plenty of the cleaner inside the tube. Do not touch anything inside the MAF sensor area with your bare fingers. The liquid will dry by itself. It's flammable, so be careful with it.

5. Also spray the wiring harness that goes into the MAF sensor, which you removed before. Allow to dry fully before putting back together.

I found a can on special at Super cheap for $16

cleaned mine(as I do a fair bit of Dusty road driving)

it says on can to clean the AFM when new air filter is installed, I clean my air filter every 5000klms so I give it a spray then

Obviously my car is not a Subaru but after i cleaned mine (was filthy) the idle was better (used to hunt before going back and forth). Also i read and hear that it also helps with fuel consumption and response. So i hear anyway.

wouldnt that be something a good tuner would check and/or clean before tuning it ?

You'd think so, But I guess it would depend on who the tuner is. I haven't heard of it being done, I think its something anyone should do BEFORE getting their beasts get tuned, like a service and new plugs.

lol

im not saying anything about anyone...im just saying like if you wanted the best out of your car when its in getting a tune that you should change your plugs, oil and oil filter, perhaps get your injectors cleaned and MAF as well...

If you had that all done before the tune, wouldnt you expect a better tune and power than if it wasnt done or reccommended ?

Yes l would expect a better tune.
I guess it just comes down to who is doing the tune and how far they want to go with it.
These are simple checks and repairs car owners can do before getting a tune.
Or ask the tuner to do them for you which cost more $$$$.

I agree that these should be done a tune but also should be advised by the tuner.....isnt it in the tuners best interest to have them done before the tune..

Its the first time that I have had a tune on my wrx and was just told to drop the car off...I wasnt advised to do anything to it beforehand and i actually even emailed the tuner a list of my mods so that he knew what he was in for...

Anyway...im learning everyday...
