The internet it based on circles!, op.. stick with setup you have, the mod list is fully ignition dvd spec, but the engine is budget spec. Have you even asked your mechanic if he will tune it with a GT35 ?, i know i woludn't touch it. The whole setup is not suited, it will probably need 25psi (With a 35R) to make 300kw & thats if it doesn't punch a rod through the block.

That's a little harsh
Its been built by Rigoli, they make a few mods when building an engine, I'm sure there room for more power, tune right and it'll be fine with 35/40
I have a similar engine, but in a 2.4 and I've been told that it will be fine for up to 330kw atw, most 3540 combos only put out between 270 - 320 anyhow, guys that have more power with these turbos have spent big $$$$$ on tune and heads to get there.

I wouldnt risk pushing anymore power out of it unless your asking for trouble.

Rods and head studs are the only weak link right? With those I could run either a gt30 or gt35 at reasonably high boost? Or would cams be a necessity too?

Spoke to the bloke I bought it off today. Turns out the ARP Head Studs are actually 14mm

Thoughts on how much rods & install should set me back to run bigger boost?

If you are going to go to the trouble of putting new rods in then you might as well do the cams at the same time aswell, and anything else that might need doing.

I know - considering the amount of money been spent on the car I don't know why he wouldn't have put some beefier rods in there. Those turbos look interesting, haven't heard of them before?

Could definitely be an option :D

Not sure whether I want to do cams at this stage as I'm scared of lag! :(

Pick the right cams and they wont add lag, will actually help with lag and make the car more responsive ;)

(small turbos need not apply LOL)

Speak to your engine builder and/or email Kelford with your engine details and whether your car is for street or track

Just to give you a bit of an idea, had my car tuned and it made 271kw at 21psi on Insight Motorsports dyno. The new tune is awesome.

When I purchased the car I was told it was making 285kw at 26psi, but going by how different the new tune feels, its a lot quicker than before. The old turbo was a GT30 .82 running 26psi on pump fuel. New tune is GT35 .82 on 21psi. Motor is 2.5L with sleeves, 14mm head studs, CP pistons and Argo Rods. The head is completely stock. The only other modification is TGV deleted and welded up.

I think full boost (21psi) is around 4500rpm in 4th gear but have not checked accurately. Ill go for a fang tonight and keep an eye on it, but it is not what I would call laggy at all. Like mentioned above, if lag worries you, drop down a gear and get the gate cracking!

Tuner said heads were restricing big turbo from making more power. Power drops off after 6500 due to standard heads. If you are going to pull motor down definitely speak to tuner/engine buider about modifications to the head. If it was any other car I would add cams at this point but I am not keen on pulling the motor out to do so, but if you already have the motor out my opinion would be to do it.

Another thing to consider about a big turbo (GT35) is that E85 will be commonly available within the next few months at Caltex servos so it will be beneficial having a E85 tune of 25-30psi and making the GT35 do some proper work. Upgrade your fuel system and reep the benefits of more boost and more timing.

Sounds awesome mate! Would definitely be keen to check out your set up. I'm thinking I'll go ahead with a GT35 and upgrade my rods at the same time. I don't think I'm too keen on doing cams.

Now for saving money!

After reviewing the available funds it appears pulling out my engine might not necessarily be an option. Rather, I'm thinking of upgrading to a ball bearing turbo (gt3076r) and hoping for earlier spool, better mid range and ideally a few more ponies. Anyone got any thoughts?
